How to Become an Elder of the Community

1 minute read

For over a year, we had an intense conversation about leadership, what the Bible says about it and how it’s implemented in the church. What does the Bible say about eldership? Should women be in leadership positions within the church? Every generation has wrestled through their own versions of these questions.

Out of this dialogue, we arrived at a working definition for eldership.

Who is an elder? Someone the community recognizes as “mature in their faith” without any other special qualifications. What does an elder do? An elder agrees to hold the responsibility of one two-fold task for a limited season–– to pray for the community and help “point towards Jesus” for the community at large.

We’ve decided our ideal is to have one person serve from each small group, with a minimum of three elders. Both men and women can serve. Character matters. There is no power over others in this role. There is only service for the benefit of the community.

So how do you become an elder?

You grow up, practice wisdom and grace, and volunteer to serve the people around you.
